…these portraits result from the cooperation between Ralf Walraff and musicians like Candy Dulfer, Juan José Mosalini, Taj Mahal, Paco de Lucia and other well known persons of the current Jazz and world music scene. Concert rehearsals, live acts or the small talk afterwards formed the basis for photographic studies in which both sides sometimes deeply concentrated, sometimes relaxed and absent-minded immersed in a sort of nonverbal communication.
This intuitive contact gives in the photographical fixed pose a form of expression of the utmost intensity. Each of the musical celebrities got involved on a very personal and very individual note in the cooperation with Ralf Walraff. For example, he was a photographer for them who wanted to make portraits of their work and paint them later, but then everybody contributed as much as possible to the success of “Sketches of Sound”.
